This explains how tips are processed when a trainer and trainee work together on a job. By default, the full tip goes to the trainer, but it can be manually split if desired.
Step 1: Identify Trainer and Trainee
In the route or job list, identify which staff member is the trainer and which is the trainee.
Example: Lindsey (trainer) and Elizabeth (trainee).
Step 2: Review Job Tips
Open each job the team completed.
Look at the tips left by customers for that job.
Example: $30 tip on one job, $15 on another.
Step 3: Automatic Tip Assignment
By default, the full tip is assigned to the trainer.
Trainees do not automatically receive a portion of the tip.
Step 4: Optional Manual Tip Split
If you want to split the tip between trainer and trainee:
Manually adjust payroll for the trainer (reduce their tip).
Add a new payroll adjustment for the trainee to give them their portion.
Step 5: Confirm in Payroll Report
Run the payroll report for the date range and staff members.
Verify the trainer received their trainer pay and tips.
Verify the trainee shows only hourly pay unless a manual tip adjustment was made.
Notes: Common Mistakes to Avoid
⚠️ Assuming trainees automatically receive tips — they must be manually adjusted.
⚠️ Not verifying payroll report — always check that tip adjustments reflect correctly.
⚠️ Incorrect split — double-check tip amounts when creating manual adjustments.
